Indian Maritime University - IMU Kochi is a Central University with autonomous status. It was established in the year 2009 to provide quality education and training in various areas of marine studies comprising marine engineering, maritime law, navigation, and marine management. IMU Kochi is approved by UGC and AICTE.
The IMU Kochi campus’s history dates back to 1981 when the Marine Engineering Training Institute (METI) was established and was upgraded to the Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI) in 1993. MERI was then merged to become the IMU - Kochi Campus.
IMU Kochi is providing UG, PG, and Doctorate level degrees through its number of courses including B.Sc in Nautical Science, MBA in International Transportation and Logistics Management, BBA in Logistics, Retailing and E-Commerce, MBA in Port and Shipping Management, M.S (By Research), and Ph.d. These courses are run in the following four schools functioning under IMU Kochi:
Candidates seeking admission to IMU Kochi campus must qualify in the Common Entrance Test (IMU-CET) conducted by the university every year. Students qualifying in the CAT / MAT / CMAT are also eligible for admission to MBA in International Transportation and Logistics Management and in Port and Shipping Management. For admission to research programs an offline entrance test will be conducted by the university.

Other than fulfilling the above-mentioned eligibility criteria, students must be medically fit and meet the physical standards as prescribed in the Merchant Shipping rules which are updated timely. Students are mandated to show a medical certificate to pursue any course. Additionally, for UG courses the age limit is set by the management.
There shall be no age limit for PG and research courses.
Students belonging to reserved and minority classes meeting the eligibility criteria for the respective scholarships are awarded a number of state scholarships at IMU Kochi campus. The university is offering scholarships through different agencies from all states in India.
IMU Students are provided summer internships in companies like Mahindra Logistics, Adani, Jetz Global Logistics, Capricorn Logistics, Beacon & Bay, German Express Shipping, and more. Industrial visits are also arranged for students to instill practical knowledge and to experience the work culture. Also, there is a separate recruitment page on the official website of the university where vacancies for different posts are posted frequently.
Many of the IMU students are working at the top positions in some of the leading companies currently. Delta Corp, Chevron Corporation, TORM, Synergy Marine Group, Shipping Corporation of India, MMS India, Dockendale Ship Management, VR Maritime Services, AP Shipping, Wilhelmsen, Seven Islands Shipping are some of the partners of the university.
IMU Kochi campus when inaugurated was spread on 2.6 acres of land and later relocated at Willingdon Island sprawling over 10 acres of land. The new campus built in 2016 has excellent academic infrastructure facilities. A new Simulator building was also constructed in the campus recently for research purpose or operator training. IMU Kochi campus has a well-furnished library enriched with an impressive collection of both printed and digital resources.
Students are also provided accommodation in the hostels constructed on the premises. A Hostel warden is appointed to manage the hostel activities. A medical officer is appointed to provide medical assistance. A well maintained and hygienic canteen is functioning in the campus providing a variety of snacks, beverages, and other food items.
