St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, offers three-year undergraduate courses BA, B.Sc, B.COM and self-financed programs like BMS, BMM, B.Sc I.T and BFA. Admissions for self-financed courses instead of B.A, F are based on the Xavier Entrance test (60%) and HSC scores (40%), while other courses rely solely on HSC scores. It also offers post-graduation courses and also has its junior college for class 11 -12. The BMM (Mass Media) course, renamed BA-MCJ (Mass Communications and Journalism) takes in 120 students every year with certain reservations for the Maharashtra Board and Christian Minority students. The college has an entrance exam for the Self-Financed courses which includes BA-MCJ. Admission is on merit basis with 60% weightage given to the entrance test and 40% weightage to 12th board marks. Previously, students had to choose between advertising and journalism in their third year but now with an aim towards holistic education the college curriculum covers both areas and students do not have to choose between the two. Xavier’s Mumbai might seem as a college that focuses a lot of extracurricular activities and fests but once you join the college, you realize that academics has to be a priority for you. 75% attendance is a must and there are a certain amount of credit points to be earned by students every year. The best part is that the curriculum keeps getting updated regularly to suit the job market needs and students are taught subjects that can help sustain themselves. Xavier's is specially known for its BMM and now BAM-CJ course. All the Self-Financed courses are very reputed and famous all over the country. A lot of academic workshops for specific departments are conducted by the faculty and renowned resource people come to teach us. The eligibility criteria for BA, B.Com and B.Sc is purely merit based i.e. marks obtained in 12th class. The cutoff is usually very high and the list closes at around 98.6%. So, to get in this is very difficult. Whereas for courses like BAM-CJ, BMS and now B.Com (Management) there is a special entrance test called XET. The final selection criterion is based on the 60-40 ratio of XET marks and 12th class marks. My motive behind enrolling in this program was because I've always had a keen interest in films, books, media and writing, I felt that this course can help me choose whether I want to go into Journalism or Advertising. Xavier's has an established brand value all over the world; many international students from the gulf come to Mumbai just to study in this college. An additional advantage for me was the city of Mumbai; as the whole media industry is based here, getting opportunities would be easier if I studied in the same city.Read Full Review
