Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) is the oldest scientific institution in Asia founded in the year 1876. IACS Kolkata is presently working as an autonomous research institution governed and funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India and Government of West Bengal. It is approved by UGC with a deemed-to-be university status on 4th June, 2008.
Vision: IACS works with a vision to pursue basic sciences at the highest level to compete globally and to become a global leader and attain international acclaim.
Mission: The institute aims to pursue all possible applications of original research in areas like organic electronics, synthesis of drugs, solar energy research, development of bio-active gel, development of new light sources, green chemistry, and Co2 sequestering.
IACS is providing degrees in programs like Integrated M.Sc-Ph.D in Biological Science, Integrated Bachelor’s and Master’s program in Science, and Integrated Master’s and Ph.D programs in Science in the following schools functioning under it:
To pursue Integrated Bachelor’s and Master’s program in Science students have to fulfill minimum eligibility criteria and have to appear in the qualifying exam conducted by the UG admission committee. The selection of the candidates is based on the performance in the admission test followed by personal interview. Admission in the Master's / Integrated Master's-Ph.D Program also requires appearing in the qualifying exam and personal interview. The minimum eligibility criteria for admission are fixed by the Central Admission Committee (CAC) each year.
Selection of the students for Ph.D courses are based on the past academic record, merit secured in the qualifying exam, personal interview, and the availability of seats in particular research areas. Students must note the eligibility criteria for various courses from the table below:
