Kumaun University Nainital has been in existence since 1973. The University was formed with merging of two distinguished government colleges, namely, Almora Government P.G College and D.S.B. Government P.G College, Nainital. The KU Campus Bhimtal is one among the two campuses of the university. The University has 20 government colleges, 61 private institutions and 1 government aided college affiliated to it. It has got “A” grade NAAC accreditation and “State University” status from UGC.

The University provides degrees at UG, PG, M.Phil, and Doctorate level. The courses run by the university include B.Pharm, MBA, M.Sc, M.Pharm, and Ph.D in Pharmacy. These courses are provided under the Department of Management Studies, Department of Biotechnology, and Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Admission to UG and PG courses in the university are given based on marks scored in the Entrance Exam conducted by the Uttarakhand Technical University. This is followed by counselling of students who are invited based on their marks in the entrance exam. Those seeking admission for Ph.D courses must qualify in the entrance exam conducted by the Directorate of Research & Extension.
