St. Joseph’s Chemistry Department was founded in the year 1927 and is the institution’s biggest science department. The Chemistry Department is included under the ‘School of Natural Sciences’ and offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in chemistry. The B.Sc. (Chemistry) program has a three-year study period divided into six semesters where every year consists of two semesters.
Students have to complete nine theoretical papers and eight practical papers. Term or semester-end examination carries a 70% weightage and CIA (continuous internal assessment) has a weightage of 39%. Some of the subjects and topics student cover include organic and inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry, chemical bonding, atomic structure, stoichiometry, statistical thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, polymer chemistry, and nuclear chemistry.
All candidates who have cleared the Karnataka’s Pre-University Education Board examination with physics, chemistry, and mathematics as compulsory subjects can apply for this course. Alternatively, any applicant who has passed any other equivalent examination approved by Bangalore Central University can apply as well.
The Microbiology Department began operating and registering students for microbiology program from 1988. The department enlists students for postgraduate and undergraduate programs in microbiology. The B.Sc. (microbiology) course is a three-year program segregated into six semesters.
B.Sc. (microbiology) students imbibe knowledge on basic microbiology and microbiological techniques, biophysics, biochemistry, and microbial diversity, microbial physiology, growth and control of microorganisms, microbial genetics, and molecular biology. Applicants need to clear the higher secondary examination of a state or central education board with biology, chemistry, and physics as mandatory subjects.
Students who studied zoology or botany (instead of biology) at the intermediate level are also eligible to apply.
The B.A (psychology) course is a fulltime, on-campus program having a study period of three years. Students, during the duration of the course, cover papers including basic psychological processes, developmental psychology, abnormal psychology, and industrial psychology. This undergraduate course equips students with a broad-spectrum synopsis of psychology and also promotes personal development through peer group interfaces and enrichment activities.
Any candidate who has cleared the pre-university examination of Karnataka Pre-University Education Board or any other equivalent exam can apply.
St. Joseph’s College introduced the M.Sc. (big data analytics) course in the year 2016. The ‘school of computer science’ under the aegis of the college registers students for this postgraduate program in big data analytics. The syllabus for this course has been devised in consultation with experts from ISI and TCS.
The M.Sc. (big data analytics) course which has two-year duration features dedicated classroom lectures in machine learning, computer science, and artificial intelligence, and statistics. At the same time, students undergo full-fledged lab sessions for resolving problems related to big data, and also complete an internship in the final semester.
All science graduates who had statistics or mathematics as related subjects, securing at least 50% in these subjects and 40% in aggregate at the degree level are eligible. Additionally, BCA graduates who have achieved a minimum of 50% in aggregate can also apply to this program.
