The establishment of the Tmt. Kannammal Education Trust in 1985 paved the way for the incorporation of the Dr. M.G.R Educational and Research Trust. The constitution of the Tmt. Kannammal Education Trust facilitated the institution of the Thai Moogambigai Polytechnic College in 1985. Thereafter, the Dr. MGR Engineering College was set up in 1988 followed by the foundation of Thai Moogambigai Dental College in 1991.
Both the engineering and dental colleges attained the status of ‘Deemed University’ in 2003 and these institutions were rechristened as Dr. MGR Educational and Research Institute. Presently, the Chennai-based educational and research institution has thirteen distinct schools of study or faculties. Some of the faculties include engineering & technology, dental surgery, humanities & science, medical and allied health sciences, architecture, management studies, computer applications, pharmacy, and nursing.
Since its inception, the academic institute has been fruitfully meeting the higher education needs of innumerable students in the aforementioned areas.
