The Government College of Education for Women Coimbatore was started in the year 1956 to cater to the need of young teachers in the schools of the Tamilnadu State. The college is working under the jurisdiction of Tamilnadu Teachers Education University (TNTEU), Chennai. It was re-accredited by NAAC in the third cycle in 2016.

Mission: Its mission is to make its students competent teachers, who are capable of meeting the global standard of education, and to create awareness about the global educational scenario, students psychology, and teaching methodologies.
Students can pursue B.Ed and M.Ed programs in regular mode and M.Phil and Ph.D programs in part-time mode in the college.
Admissions to the teaching programs are given based on the guidelines and reservation policy of the affiliating university, TNTEU. Students for B.Ed program are shortlisted through Single Window Counseling conducted by Lady Willingdon IASE, Chennai.

A Placement and Training Cell has been functioning in the college to facilitate job opportunities for the students, for which the cell conducts a career fair every year and maintains a good report with the recruiting schools. Students are given vacancy position details collected from the recruiting schools and afterwards a date is fixed to organise career fairs. The alumni of the college are working in various schools, colleges, and the Department of Education in Tamil Nadu State.
The college campus is nestled in the heart of Coimbatore city. The infrastructure of the campus has been upgraded to make it suitable for the present day education. For teaching and learning, there are classrooms, tutorial spaces, learning spaces, seminar halls, and laboratories. All the classrooms have projectors and white boards to display study material. The library of the college stocks learning resources in different disciplines and is equipped with a printer and reprographic facility for its users. Braille materials are also available in the library for visually impaired students. Additionally, wheel chairs, ramps, and lifts are made available for physically challenged students.
