BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) program offered by SKAMSCH&RC aims to instill comprehensive knowledge about Ayurvedic treatment system. The five-year BAMS course tends to be a fulltime on-campus program whose syllabus follows guidelines stipulated by the Central Council for Indian Medicine. CCIM as the statutory body controls Ayurveda education in India both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
The curriculum of BAMS covers a wide range of topics including but not limited to modern anatomy & physiology, classical texts, social and preventive medicine, and Sanskrit. Students also pick up basics of Ayurvedic toxicology, pharmacology and pharmaceutics, modern pharmacology, clinical methods, and diagnostics, detoxification, ENT, ophthalmology, pediatrics, gynecology and obstetrics, and general medicine.
Once students complete the BAMS course, they can opt to specialize in a specific segment of Ayurveda or start practicing. The students have to opt for an internship (usually lasting for a year) to gain practical clinical and diagnostic experience. Apart from regular practice, BAMS graduates can boost their careers by practicing a specialty like skin diseases or spinal disorders.
To apply for the course, a candidate needs to clear the 10+2 examination of Karnataka PUC education board. The subject combination must be physics, chemistry, and biology with English as a compulsory subject. Additionally, the candidate must secure at least 50% marks in aggregate in the final PUC examination.
SKAMC offers two M.D programs with specialization in Panchkarma and Kayachikista respectively. Both M.D courses are fulltime on-campus programs and have a three year study period. Panchkarma, a Sanskrit term, means five treatments or five actions. Panchakarma is a time-honored healing process that helps the body to get rid of toxic substances.
Usually, the body’s immune system can effectively remove toxic waste but poor and undisciplined lifestyle weakens an individual’s immunity. The Panchakarma process expedites the elimination of toxic elements from stomach, intestines, urinary tract, colon, sweat glands, bladder, and lungs. Talking about Kayachikitsa, this curative procedure constitutes the first of Astanga or eight-branched Ayurveda dealing with general medicine.
Kayachikitsa implies total or complete body treatment where ‘kaya’ stands for body and ‘chikitsa’ means therapy or treatment. To qualify for this masters’ degree program in Ayurveda, a student should possess the BAMS certification of an approved university.
The medical college and research center registers students for three distinct M.S programs. A student who has earned a BAMS degree from a recognized university can apply for a M.S program in shalya tantra (modern surgery), shalakya tantra (treatment of diseases pertaining to the head, eyes, ears, nose, and throat), and prasuti tantra and stree roga (obstetrics and gynecology). A student needs to clear the BAMS examination of a certified higher education institution to qualify for any of the M.S programs.
