Government Arts College was founded in 1854 as a provincial school. In 1867, it was changed to Government College. It was earlier known as Government Arts College for Men. This was amongst one of the most prestigious and oldest educational institutes in Madras presidency of British India. It is a NAAC accredited college which is affiliated to Bharathidasan University.
