Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University, Malappuram established in 2012 is a State University. Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University Malappuram is approved by UGC. The Government of Kerala laid the foundation stone of Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University in the year 2012. The regional language university is a “State University” approved by UGC. The University is named after the father of Malayalam language, ‘Ezhuthachan’.
The main aim of the university is to provide education at the postgraduate level in various disciplines in Malayalam language, to encourage Malayalam speaking students towards education, and to make them feel proud of their mother tongue. The University provides M.A and Ph.D degrees in diverse areas including Malayalam Language Studies, Traditional Knowledge Studies, Social Sciences, Media Studies, Environmental Studies, Literature, Arts, and Heritage Studies.
Admissions to the University for M.A courses in various disciplines are subject to clearing the entrance test besides fulfilling few other eligibility criteria for a particular course the student has applied for. Generally, the minimum qualification to be eligible to apply for M.A course in the university is a Bachelor's degree recognised by UGC. An applicant can apply for a maximum of two courses simultaneously in the university and has to attempt the Aptitude test for both the courses separately. Minimum 40% marks are needed in the Aptitude test and equal weightage is given to academic performance in the qualifying exam and the Aptitude test. Additionally, the upper age limit while joining the M.A program is 28 years (30 years for SC / ST candidates).
To enroll for Ph.d program in the university, candidates must score at least 55% marks in the qualifying Master’s degree exam (50% for SC / ST applicants). The final selection of the candidates will be made considering the marks obtained in the Entrance test, scores of Master’s degree and Interview with weightage of 50:25:25, respectively.
Note: The application forms can be submitted online or by post or physically to the registrar office in the university.
The top students in the university are awarded ‘Nakshathra Scholarship’. Students who are interested in availing the benefit of the scholarship must clear the Scholarship test conducted by the university. Also, students can avail only one scholarship at a time, therefore, those who are already receiving any other scholarship amount are not eligible to attempt the scholarship exam.

The university campus called Aksharam campus is located in Tirur, Malappuram district, Kerala in a serene, calm, and natural environment. The campus is located adjacent to the Thunchan Memorial Government College and is 7 kms from Tirur Railway Station. The campus is nestled in greenery with abundance of flowering plants and creepers. The administrative block in the campus was designed with Kerala’s traditional ‘Nadumuttam’ to ensure a peaceful environment. The Heritage Museum in the university displays the rich cultural traditions and lifestyle of Kerala. The cultural programs and other events in the university are conducted in a multipurpose auditorium called, ‘Rangsala’. There’s a Compact theater called, ‘Chitrasala’ which can accommodate 100 people.
