The history of the Cotton University Guwahati dates back to 1901, when the university was established as Cotton College. Later in 2011, the Cotton College State University was established following the act passed in the Assam Legislature, with the Cotton College as a constituent. The Cotton College State University and Cotton College were amalgamated in 2017. The university was declared a State University by UGC.

The thirty departments and three centers in the university offer a wide range of UG, PG, Diploma, and Doctorate level courses in different disciplines. M.A, M.Sc, B.A (Hons.), BCA, MCA, LL.M, B.Sc Honors, etc are the programs run by the university. These courses are provided under the five following faculty heads:
Admission in the Cotton University for UG courses are based on merit and following the norms of the university. For admission to four year undergraduate programs (B.A Hons. and B.Sc Hons.) candidates must appear in the CUET-UG in the subject combination mapped to each program. The university reserves 50% seats for PG courses for Cotton University graduates. The remaining 50% seats are offered to applicants from other recognised universities. Admission for PG courses are subject to CGPA, CPGEE, and by following the reservation policy of the Government of Assam. For admission to Ph.D courses, candidates must qualify in the NET or the Entrance Exam conducted by the university. The eligibility criteria to appear for the Ph.D entrance exam are Master’s degree with at least 55% marks or equal grades (50% for SC / ST applicants). To promote social equality and provide monetary assistance to the financially weak students, the university is offering a number of scholarships to the deserving candidates who meet the eligibility criteria of the respective scholarships. Indira Gandhi Scholarship for Single Girl Child, PG Scholarship for University Rank Holders, Ishan Uday Special Scholarship Scheme, Post-Matric Scholarship for SC Students are some of the many scholarships received by eligible students of the university. Scholarships for Economically Weaker students are given to those candidates whose annual family income is below Rs. 5 lacs.

The Placement and Career Counseling Cell drives its efforts throughout the year to place the university students in some of the best companies currently. The PACC Cell grooms its students to acquire soft skills, personality development, and undertake internships to increase their prospects of employability. The Cell conducts various activities like Startup Manthan program, Pre-Placement Grooming Session, etc.
Cotton University is operating from its three campuses: Panbazar campus (24.9 acres), Roopnagar campus (4.59 acres), and Bongora Campus (47.62 acres). Among the three campuses, Panbazar is the oldest campus and is situated in a 5 minutes’ walk from the "Mahabahu" Brahmaputra River. All the campuses have state-of-the-art infrastructure facilities for the overall development of the students.
