Bharathiar University

Bharathiar University, Coimbatore was established in 1982 as a State University by the government of Tamil Nadu. It has been recognized by the UGC to give out grants and has the accreditation of NAAC with an “A” grade. It is an affiliating university with over 100 affiliated colleges located in places like Erode, Tirupur, Coimbatore, the Nilgiris and Pollachi.

The university offers multiple UG, PG, Doctorate, Diploma, M.Phil and Certificate programmes from more than 30 departments. It fosters and cultivates a culture to promote and enhance research and innovation through cutting-edge technology and methodology by also infusing industry professionalism into the curriculum. This is achieved by inviting industry experts like product development managers, R&D managers, technical managers, etc. as guest lecturers by the Board of Studies.

Its motto is to “Educate to Elevate” through which the university aims to bestow quality education while upholding the secular ideas of our constitution. It is also in partnership with the MHRD National Knowledge Network. An autonomous research institute by the name of DRDO-BU-Centre for Life Sciences was also established as a joint venture with DRDO to engage in and facilitate basic and applied research. The university also admits international students.

The university strives to provide the highest quality of education with the assistance of a committed team of faculty members who are highly qualified and aptly equipped with all the modern and effective pedagogies required to transform and create future assets for the industry as well as the country.

It launched the Community College System in 2007 to equip and empower underprivileged and destitute people. The main goal of the institute is to reinstate the right to education to all to arm everyone to earn a living. It is focused on imparting skill-based, job-oriented, life-coping and work-related education and is specifically concerned with the urban poor, rural poor, tribal poor, and women.

The university offers various courses for each of which the student has to apply separately. The how-to of the admission process is mentioned below in brief:

• Visit the university website and access the application form,
• An application fee of Rs. 400 is to be paid for each application form submitted,
• SC/ST candidates are to pay an application fee of Rs. 200.

The university offers a number of scholarships to its UG, PG and Doctorate students to encourage and empower them in their educational journey towards a brighter future. Details of scholarships are mentioned below in brief:

Apart from these scholarships offered, UGC offers a wide array of scholarships and fellowships that can also be availed by the students. One seat is reserved for each of the following categories as well:

• A person with a permanent disability.
• A sports person who has participated at either one of the levels- international, national, state, and/or inter-university.

The university has also implemented a Free Education Scheme to support and promote education for underprivileged and talented students starting from the academic year 2007-2008. Interested students can seek admission to any of the colleges affiliated with the university. It has reserved 5% seats in each course for talented but unfortunate students. It follows the criterion of merit-cum-economic status and gives preference on the basis of parental status, economic status, social status, and academic status. Eligible students can download the application form from the university website and send the filled-out application to the principal of the affiliated college and the head of the concerned department they have applied to for admission.
