Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research - IGIDR Mumbai was established and funded by the Reserve Bank of India. It was an autonomous research society when registered on November 14, 1986 and later recognised as Deemed to be University under section 3 of the UGC Act. Initially the institute was started as a research institution but gradually developed into a full-fledged teaching cum research organisation in 1990. Now it is also accredited by NAAC.
Vision: The vision of IGIDR is to encourage and carry out research on developmental issues from a broad interdisciplinary standpoint. It aims to gain insights into the process of development by disseminating the knowledge acquired.
Mission: It aims to undertake projects or activities for the advancements of development and social welfare by carrying out training for advanced degrees and by promoting cooperative endeavors between research scholars and institutions in India and abroad.
The university is providing degrees to various courses at PG, Doctorate, and M.Phil. level. Multiple courses available for students include Master of Science (Economics), M.Phil. and Ph.D in Development Studies, etc. Students can find out the complete list of all the courses offered on the official website or by contacting the university.
Admissions of the candidates are based on the online test conducted by IGIDR for the various courses. In order to enroll to the university, candidates must apply online for the test followed by an interview. The online test will be held separately for M.Sc and Ph.D applicants. IGIDR has initiated a Capacity Building program with funding from the International Development Research Centre Canada, and under the program various scholarships are offered to the students pursuing M.Sc in Economics, M.Phil program in Development Studies, Visiting Doctoral Students, and Post-Doctoral Program. But to avail the scholarship in these programs candidates must satisfy the eligibility criteria. The Placement Committee at the university most commonly referred to as Placecom by the university students is in charge of handling the summer and executive placements of graduate students. The Placecom drives its efforts to shape the future of the students by interacting with various sectors and building healthy relationships with the recruiters. The committee efficiently manages and coordinates all the activities starting from the summer internship to pre placement talks, and till now has maintained a very good placement record.
Continuous efforts of the Placement Committee at IGIDR have attracted many companies to visit the campus for placement.
