Kerala Kalamandalam, Thrissur is a premiere public institution established for the promotion and preservation of Kerala's traditional performing arts. The institute initially was a training center for Kathakali and now has become a symbol of excellence with its name registered on the international cultural map. It was founded in 1930 and relocated its own campus in 1936 in Cheruthuruthy village of Thrissur District. In 2006 it was proclaimed deemed to be university status for art and culture by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India.
Vision: The institute's vision is to preserve and maintain the traditional system of teaching and schooling known as Gurukula Sampradayam in Indian performing arts. Its aim is to create versatile artists who are competent in continuing and enriching the traditions in all the disciplines of Kerala's traditional performing arts. It also aims to foster research on the regional and performing arts of Kerala.
The institute is imparting training in various performance disciplines. It is predominantly a familial institution offering various UG, PG, and PhD. courses. Additionally candidates can also pursue secondary and higher secondary courses. All the art courses offered at Kalamandalam are under the following department heads:
Admission to the institute is open for all Indian citizens irrespective of the caste, religion, race, gender or place of birth. All the policies and procedures to the university level are applicable at Kalamandalam along with the reservation policy. An entrance test will be taken for admission to all the courses at the institute. Additionally, students must fulfill the eligibility criteria for the various courses. Students of the institute stay within the campus as this is a strictly residential university. The training of the students focuses on physical exercise, body massage, recapitulation and repetition of lessons learned. To train and to provide every facility required for comfortable stay and learning necessary facilities have been provided by the university.
Canteen at the institute is mainly for regular students. Only vegetarian food is offered in it. There is a guest house and a PWD rest house 2 km away from the institute campus having all the facilities of comfortable stay for visitors. Besides this, government rest house, star hotels are also present at the nearby locations where visitors can stay.
Students apart from training are also given theoretical knowledge in the classes for inculcating a spirit of inquiry among them. There is also Kathakali make-up class which is the most intriguing course, where students can watch applying different make-ups on earthen pots. Programmes for research and higher studies in the field of performing arts are also started by the university.
